The Client’s Challenge
The business owner came to me after working with another agency. While their sales were somewhat steady, the owner was left with razor-thin margins after factoring in ad spend and the agency’s retainer. He was actually debating whether to pull the plug on advertising these products entirely. When he contacted me, my first instinct was to run a comprehensive audit of their historical performance, website, and data feed to find the leaks.
My Approach & Solution
After reviewing their Google Merchant Center (GMC), previous campaigns, and website, I found one overarching issue: poor data quality. Product titles were often less than 15 characters, product attributes in Merchant Center were not properly defined, and much necessary information was missing. Certain products were eating up budgets—getting clicks but operating at a loss or with significantly diminished returns. These low-performing products should have been actively excluded to balance the account’s efficiency.
On the bright side, their product photography was solid. I saw the potential for a massive turnaround immediately. I confidently told the client I could take the account from a 2.5x ROAS to at least a 5x ROAS. By the end of our first month, I delivered an 8.33x ROAS.
The Strategy
Instead of optimizing purely for clicks, my strategy was strictly revenue-driven. We focused on:
- Optimized Product Feed: I thoroughly cleaned up the Google Merchant Center data to ensure high-quality, highly relevant signals were being fed to Google’s algorithm.
- Revenue-Driven Bidding: I leveraged value-based bidding strategies to prioritize high-margin conversions over cheap, low-intent traffic.
- Multi-Dimensional Product Segmentation: I segmented the catalog across multiple dimensions, including Average Order Value (AOV), profit margin, and 30-day historical performance. I also identified “hidden gem” mid-tier products, classifying them as future Hero products because I knew my feed improvements would dramatically boost their visibility and performance.
- Tier-Based Campaign Structure: Based on this deep segmentation, I built a tier-based campaign architecture. This included a dedicated campaign for our newly established Hero products to maximize the budget on proven winners.
The Outcome & Success
The campaign generated nearly $20,000 in sales from a modest ad spend, delivering consistent, highly profitable results. Because the foundation is now built on a perfectly clean feed and high-quality data, the account is primed for aggressive scaling—allowing us to comfortably increase the daily budget without sacrificing profitability.
